HRT-HOOD™
By: Burns, A.; Wellings, A.
Published by: Elsevier Science

The increasing use of computers for real-time control on board spacecrafts has brought with it a greater emphasis on the development methodology used for such systems. By their nature, spacecraft control computers have to operate unattended for long periods and because of the programmatics of space, systems are subject to a long development cycle. As a result, there are two distinct concerns, the first being that the development approach guarantees functional and timing correctness, the second being that problems, particularly those associated with timing, are considered as early as possible in the spacecraft development life cycle. The European Space Agency has, for a number of years, encouraged the development of software using HOOD. It was thus a natural next step to investigate the incorporation of time within the existing HOOD framework. This has proven to be very beneficial and this book describes the approach developed by the authors for handling Hard Real-Time applications. It describes both the background scheduling theory, provides practical examples of its application to real life problems, and demonstrates how it is used in the various phases of the development of Hard Real-Time systems. more...

Industrial Strength Parallel Computing
By: Koniges, Alice E.
Published by: Morgan Kaufmann (Elsevier Science & Technology Books)

Today, parallel computing experts can solve problems previously deemed impossible and make the "merely difficult" problems economically feasible to solve. This book presents and synthesizes the recent experiences of reknown expert developers who design robust and complex parallel computing applications. They demonstrate how to adapt and implement today's most advanced, most effective parallel computing techniques. The book begins with a highly focused introductory course designed to provide a working knowledge of all the relevant architectures, programming models, and performance issues, as well as the basic approaches to assessment, optimization, scheduling, and debugging.Next comes a series of seventeen detailed case studies—all dealing with production-quality industrial and scientific applications, all presented firsthand by the actual code developers. Each chapter follows the same comparison-inviting format, presenting lessons learned and algorithms developed in the course of meeting real, non-academic challenges. A final section highlights the case studies' most important insights and turns an eye to the future of the discipline. more...

Information Assurance and Computer Security
By: Thomas, J.P. (ed.); Essaaidi, M. (ed.)
Published by: IOS Press

Today's society can no longer function without information technology. Essential infrastructure including the transportation system, banking, the entertainment industry, the healthcare system, government, the military and the education system can no longer survive without modern technology. This increasing dependence on information technology creates new opportunities for the benefit of society. However, it also opens an avenue that can be exploited for illicit purposes. The stakes are high and many attacks go undetected or unreported. In addition to losses such as data or other forms of intellectual property, financial theft or the shut down of infrastructure, computer security attacks that target critical infrastructure such as nuclear power plants have the potential to cause human casualties on a massive and unprecedented scale. This book provides a discussion on a wide variety of viewpoints on some of the main challenges facing secure systems. This book will therefore be of major interest to all researchers in academia or industry with an interest in computer security. It is also relevant to graduate and advanced level undergraduate students who may want to explore the latest developments in the area of computer and information security. more...

Interconnection Networks
By: Duato, Jose; Yalamanchili, Sudhakar; Ni, Lionel
Published by: Morgan Kaufmann (Elsevier Science & Technology Books)

The performance of most digital systems is limited by their communication or interconnection, not by their logic or memory. Interconnection networks have become pervasive in their traditional application as processor-memory and processor-processor interconnect. This book presents the basic underlying concepts of most interconnection networks. more...

An Introduction to NURBS
By: Rogers, David F.
Published by: Morgan Kaufmann (Elsevier Science & Technology Books)

NURBS (Non-uniform Rational B-Splines) are the computer graphics industry standard for curve and surface description. They are now incorporated into all standard computer-aided design and drafting programs (for instance, Autocad). They are also extensively used in all aspects of computer graphics including much of the modeling used for special effects in film and animation, consumer products, robot control, and automobile and aircraft design. So, the topic is particularly important at this time because NURBS are really at the peak of interest as applied to computer graphics and CAD of all kinds. Many people who use computer graphics technology do not have degrees in maths or even computer graphics. This book - which requires a much lower level of mathematical sophistication than most geometric modeling books - goes a long way to making this topic accessible to many thousands who might not otherwise be able to use this technology successfully. As such it should be attractive to a much wider audience than the typical Computer Graphics reference book. more...
