Acquiring a Non-Native Phonology
By: Hansen, Jette G.
Published by: Continuum

This is a study of the phonological development of a family of L2 English learners. It is the first full-length book that focuses on a tightly-knit group of learners' acquisition of phonology over a longitudinal timeframe, and the first book to study both social and linguistic factors across that time period. Jette G. Hansen analyses this data gathered from actual language learners in the light of recent theory, as well as challenging aspects of current thinking on the subject of second language acquisition. Acquiring a Non-Native Phonology therefore makes an important and original contribution to the field and provides an in-depth analysis and discussion of the developmental processes in acquiring a non-native sound system which has not previously been presented. The book is aimed at academics interested in second language acquisition, and researchers studying phonology in general. more...

The Discourse Potential of Underspecified Structures
By: Steube, Anita
Published by: Walter de Gruyter

The volume demonstrates the interdependence of man’s language capacity and his other conceptual capacities. This enables linguistic structures to be minimalised, and for extra-linguistic domains to provide much of the interpretations of sound and meaning. Underspecification is demonstrated in the word formation of Indo-European, Late Archaic Chinese and modern Khmer; on the word- and sentence levels by the event structures of German; and in the information structure predominantly of languages with the so-called free word order: German, Slavic languages, Arabic compared with English and the tone language Hausa. The volume is noteworthy due to the close cooperation between theoretical and experimental research. Within grammar, it has especially strengthened prosodic research and the syntax-phonology interrelations and their interpretations, and it has helped to create data bases for the relations within texts and to evaluate the findings. more...

Grammatica diacronica del napoletano
By: Ledgeway, Adam Noel
Published by: Max Niemeyer Verlag

A rich and long literary tradition (dating back as early as the late 13th century), coupled with an abundance of diachronic and synchronic variation, affords Neapolitan a privileged position amongst the Romance languages, offering the Romance linguist a rare opportunity to explore the structural evolution of one of the lesser known Romance varieties. Yet, while evidence from other Romance languages and dialects has had a profound influence on the development of theoretical issues relating to language structure, variation and change, references to Neapolitan are conspicuous by their absence, simply because the relevant facts are not widely known or have not been analysed in sufficient detail for their theoretical significance to be assessed. As a consequence, the potential significance of Neapolitan for both Romance linguistics and linguistic theory in general has been largely overlooked in the literature. The present volume aims to rectify this situation by providing an extensive documentation and in-depth diachronic description of Neapolitan phonology, morphology and syntax which is comprehensive enough to qualify as a reference grammar but which is formulated within a conceptual frame-work which allows individual facts to be studied as part of a coherent system and compared with other Romance languages. In this respect, the results of the investigations offer a valuable insight into the little studied structure of Neapolitan, while making a significant contribution towards cataloguing the linguistic typology of dialects within the Italian peninsula and, at the same time, bridging the gap between the familiar data of standard Romance and those of lesser known Romance varieties. more...
